Pieter Poel, who had taken up residence in Hamburg "Großen Freiheit" and, after travels with the merchant and future Baron, Caspar Voght, to France (Paris) and England (London) – Spring 1786 – finally settled down in Altona in 1789, where he “published” the “Altona Mercurius” after purchasing the royal (Danish) privilege, which he did not manage himself (see Alberti 1868, Pg.211) – it was the most important German publication of its time for the entire Northern hemisphere, as well as the National Calendar.
Pieter Poel was generally active as a journalist and author.
We don't know if Wilhelm von Archenholtz and Piter Poel has known themselves, but their common "frankophil" sense, encouragement for La Fayette and their publicist ambitions - "Minerva" und "Altonaischen Mercurius" - , assumed it.
Poel kept residence in Altona at Große Freiheit “between de Valory und Brüdergemeinde“ and later during summers resided at his country estate Neumühlen, which he had purchased in November 1793 with grand merchants Georg Heinrich Sieveking and Conrad Johann Matthiessen after the sale of Neumühlen in 1811, in Teufelsbrücke from 1812, and finally from 1816 until 1822 in Flottbek together with Baron Voght .

So much was written about the Neumühlener und Flottbeker circle and the “family” that we simply refer to the existing writings (Attachment).
Poel’s relations, including family relations stretched all across Europe.

Poel was also Director of the Altona Institute for the Support of French Emigrants. This complied his humanitarian noble sentinents, which he later (1816) revealed in a expertise above the "schleswig-holsteinische Armenwesen" and put him in the intellectual near of "Voghts Christentum der Tat".
