After his retirement on 1 January 1905 Wolfgang Poel lived at his Estate Landsitz Charlottenhöhe near Itzehoe (which he acquired 1 May 1903) until 19 May 1911, then in Lübeck.

He wrote his memoirs. (2 Volumes of Memoires by Peter Wolfgang Poel (“Selbsterlebtes“) kept at the Nat’l Archives, Hamburg with “Register“. Family /Archives 424-88/39 Poel)

From 1888 to 1905 Wolfgang Poel was on the Board of Directors, then Chairman and finally Honorary Member of the Board of ther Alsterdorfer Anstaltenin Hamburg.
